The wise man obeys. Matt. 7:28-29
When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.Let's cut to the chase today, Jesus has authority. He speaks with it. He commands it. And too many Christians, that is the followers of Jesus, ignore him.
I've asked this question before, and I know the answer, but I have to ask it again. If you have been reading his Word, if you say you are a follower of Jesus, if you say you are a Christian, if you say you have been saved, then why aren't you flocking to his commanding presence?
As Jesus wraps up his Sermon on the Mount, those listening to him are marveling. Jesus, who looks like you and me, is speaking as one with authority, not like other rabbis. He demands that we obey the Word (Matt. 5:19). And just in case we don't understand what the Word said, he spells it out for us: Remember your Lord before you think about calling people names (Matt. 5:22); remember your Lord before you disrobe them (Matt. 5:28); remember your Lord before you call your spouse names (Matt. 5:32); remember your Lord, who is honorable and trustworthy (Matt. 5:37); remember your Lord by giving until it hurts, and then give some more (Matt. 5:41); remember your Lord by thinking of others and shunning selfishness (Matt. 5:46).
Humble yourself, Jesus urges throughout the whole of his sermon. Humble yourself by remembering God above all things (Matt. 6:4; Matt. 6:9-13; Matt. 6:18, Matt. 6:24).
I don't know about you, but I marvel at the teaching of Jesus, who reminds me that all my needs will be met, all my illnesses will be cured. I marvel at the teaching of Jesus by remembering Him.
So if you are marveling, too, if you are believing Him like I am right now, are you ready for the rest of the truth? You need to obey the Word, Jesus declares. Be the wise man who builds his house on the rock, that is the Word of God. Be the wise man who turns every day, every minute of every day if necessary, repenting and obeying and believing.
Remember the teaching of the one who speaks with authority.
And believe.
