Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. John 3:31-36
He who comes from above is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way. He who comes from heaven is above all. He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony. Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true. For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure. The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. It's been too long since I wrote. But today I couldn't resist this. I love discovering great passages of Scripture. Most of you are likely more familiar with the more famous passages of John 3: Jesus' discourse with Nicodemus. Today, though, I flew right through that and landed on this section, where John the Baptist exalts the Christ to a Jew who had questions about purification. I can't recall ever really getting into it this one, for some reason. But it almost sings.
It reminds me of Hebrews 1:1-4, Colossians 1:15-23. Or the beautiful composition of John 1:1-14 and 1 John 1:1-4. There are so many more.
Today, the Gospel rings loud in John 3: Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true, and whoever believes has eternal life. God showed us the light in John 1. Believe the Word, the Word made flesh, the Word of God. Believe the Word of truth: God so loved us that he died for us, cleansed us, justified us, sanctifies us, saves us.
Today we have seen the truth.
Just believe.
